The ship was the N.M. Paterson & Sons Ltd. "WINDOC." On August 11, 2001 the Windoc collided with Bridge 11 on the Welland Canal in Allanburg Ontario, Canada. The bridge operator sat above the bridge and observed the Windoc approaching. He raised the bridge to allow the ship to pass underneath, but due to the position of his cab and the length of the ship, he lost visual contact with both ends, because he was seated and not standing...
...With the ship in a "blind spot" he assumed that it had passed under the bridge, and proceeded to lower it again, striking the Windoc. It was determined that the bridge operator was impaired by pain medication, fatigue and alcohol at the time of the incident. The ship was withdrawn from service and as far as I know, was scrapped.
