When I travel somewhere I bring my GSM phone then upon arrival I buy local prepaid sim card. Thats cheapest soulution usually but drawback is that you have to give your contacts new phone number.
And easier and chipest way of comunication is SMS messages, I mean thats what I use alot...

As advertised the Sim card came with it for many countries. Evidentally I will always have the same phone number, but will only be billed when it is used. No monthly fees, etc.  :mobile_ph
