Acapulco's History

3000 BC Archeological excavations at La sabana in the hills outside Acapulco, have Uncovered Nahua artifacts dating back some 2000 years. The Nahua was the Tribe that preceded the Aztecs.
1000 BC Acapulco founded by the Tiajulca Indians. In Pre-Columbian times the Province of Guerrero was part of the Mexican Empire of the Aztecs.
1512 First recorded visit by a Spanish Ship to Acapulco Bay.
1521 A triumphant Hernán Cortés sent one of his men to locate sites for trading Ports, On December 31 of the same year, Fernando Chico, became the first European to reach Acapulco and named the bay Santa Luc*a.
1530 Ships for exploring purposes, were built at Spanish settlement occupying the city’s present site.
1532 Acapulco officially became, a dominion of the Spanish Crown.
1559 Ships constructed in Acapulco left port to begin their trip to the far East. With this began the lucrative trade with China and Japan of Cinnamon,
Nutmeg and a great variety of spices, silk porcelain and many other beautiful objects.
1579 King Philip II of Spain declared Acapulco as the only commercial port between America and Asia.
1617 The Spaniards Adrian Boot built Acapulco’s first fort El Castillo de San Diego.
1776 El Castillo de San Diego, was destroyed by an earth quake , but soon was. Replaced by El Fuerte de San Diego (The fortress of San Diego).
1799 Acapulco was declared an Official City by King Carlos IV.
1810 Mexican war of independence begin.
1815 Commerce between Acapulco and Manila come to close do to the
Independence war.
19th Century Acapulco changed hands many times during periods of Civil War.
1920 Acapulco began to be viewed as a vacation destination. The Prince of Wales the future King Edward VIII, visited the bay in a fishing excursion.
1927 First paved road built between México City and Acapulco.
1928 First Airport constructed.
1930 The Acapulco Cathedral of nuestra Señora de La Soledad was builds it.
1936 Telephone service installed.
1946/52 The man truly responsible for Acapulco’s succeed in the 20th century was Mexican President Miguel Alemán, Building the Avenia Costera Miguel Alemán along the Bay. And was constructed the New International Airport. City laid out to accommodate tourism.
1950 Acapulco was making headlines as a getaway for Hollywood stars and Jet Setting America and European Millionaires.
1960/1970 The 60’s and 70’s was one of glorious excess as it becoming one of the world’s top resort destinations as well as Mexico’s most notorious party

Today Acapulco is a population of 2.5 million in habitants, and still considered one of the most famous resorts in the world.

Acapulco is a tourist destiny privileged by nature. Protected by the green mountain of the Sierra Madre del Sur mountain range. Acapulco faces the Pacific Ocean with a beautiful bay with imposing rocky formations that, together with the sister bay of the Puerto Marques, have several natural coves, high cliffs and beautiful beaches with several wave forms and bordered by green palm trees and an abundant vegetation.

The Cliff Divers

This place is located very close to the center of the city. La Quebrada was formed after a hill was dynamited and broke in two creating a byway that goes to the cliffs, from where, since 1934, natives on the city perform spectacular dives.

This majestic 35 meter high cliff has an incomparable natural beauty. The performance at La Quebrada starts whene visitors arrive to the mirador, that has several levels.As you go down the steps, you will feel closer to the infuriated sea and the intrepid tritons.

The prepartion of the divers is a ritual, they go down the mirador stairs, to the sea through the sharp rocks, swim through the sea segment and climb up the sharp cliff up to a rocky formation called La Plancha then, divers exercise in preparation of their deed, some of them even have the marks of their dangerous and impressive job. They kneel and make the sign of the cross in front of an image of Our Lady of Guadalupe and then wave to the expecting crowd before they start their performance. The climaz in the dive, while making sculptural figures that end when they plunge into the wavy ocean surface. The exhibition is even more attractive at night since divers jump with lit torches on their hands.

Fort of San Diego

This centenary fort was constructed to protect the place from the constant pirate attacks it was buil with stones and is a silent witness of the Colonial Era. it has a pentagonal base and five bulwarks, chambers with domes and a vault it currently houses the Acapulco Historial Museum.

Convention Center

Located next to the Golf Club, on Av. Costera Miguel Alemán, is this impressive archtectural complex in which countless national and international events have taken place in houses the Tehotihuacan Hall, the Juan Ruiz de Alarcón Theater and the Netzahualcoyotl Theater, where conventions, meeting. seminars and private parties are held. CICI Waterpark

This recreational resort meant for persons of all ages was inaugurated in 1980 with an artificial-wave pool, huge water slides, an aquarium restaurant, aquatic live performances with seals and dolphins. It is strategically located and can be accessed at the Costera Miguel Aleman and from the beach.

Bay of Puerto Marques

It is located on the south-eastern side of Acapulco and surrounded by exuberant vegetation with gentle waves it is for practicing all sea sports.


Pie de la Cuesta

Located only 15 minutes from Acapulco Bay and separated from the ocean by a sand bar is the lagoon of Coyuca, this lagoon has an extension of 28 square miles of fresh water. this place has several islets; La Montosa, Los Pajaros, La Pelona and El Presidio, which can be visited during a nice rowboat outing and that are the refuge of several wild birds. This place is visited by those who love skiing and fishing. It is surrounded by water resorts and typical restaurants and represents a place in which visitors rest from Acapulco’s dynamic night life.


Lagoon of Tres Palos

This tranquil fresh-water and beautiful lagoon receives its waters from the Papagayo River before it flows to the sea, forming a water extension four times the size of Acapulco Bay. It has abundant wild flora and fauna and is a strategical ecological reservation.

LA Roqueta Island

This island located at the entrance of the Acapulco Bay, was used formerly by pirates that attacked the Nao of Manila to hide their valuable treasures, It lies in front of the beaches of Caleta and Caletilla, place where they wharf to get there is. The tour is highly attractive to visitors since the journey is in glass bottom boats, Here tourists can appreciate marine fauna and the submerged Virgin of Guadalupe, patroness of the fishermen. The island has a huge beach with mils waves and a zoo that, regardless of its small size, is full of trees and plants.

The most traditional and visited beaches in the port are:

Caleta and Caletilla
These are known as lineage beaches.

La Angosta Beach
This is a small beach located close to la Quebrada.

Tlacopanocha Beach
Where the small boats that sail every day to fish are.

Tamarindos, Hornos and Hornitos Beaches
They are great for beach sports.

Condesa Beach
In the golden zone. This privileged position converts it into a gallery of beautiful women.

Icacos Beach
At the Presidente Hotel, where it receives strong waves at the Hyatt Regency Hotel with soft sand and mild waves.

Revolcadero
This is the perfect place to look at the majesty of the ocean. Located inside to Puerto Marques.

Barra Vieja Beach
Is several kilometers long and 50 to 100 meter wide depending on the zone. Its sand is fine and light gray. Since this beach faces open sea, its waves are continuos and range from regular to strong. The slope is steep. There are several restaurants close to this beach in which visitors can taste sea food such as the famous “pescado a la talla” (grilled-cooked fish) and Mexican food.
