I have been swimming / snorkeling a number of times in the Bahamas in October. The water is not as warm as it is in laate august -September, but it is not completelly unbearable, either.
As Char mentioned - it IS still hurricane season when you will be there. The peak part of the season will be winding down then, but the season doesn't officially end until Nov 30.
The Atlantic basin shows a very peaked season from August through October, with 78% of the tropical storm days, 87% of the minor hurricane days, and 96% of the major hurricane days occurring then. Maximum activity is in early to mid September. Once in a few years there may be a tropical cyclone occurring "out of season" - primarily in May or December.
