Costa Luminosa handover cancelled

The Italian shipyard, Fincantieri, has decided to cancel the handover of the new Costa cruise line ship Costa Luminosa.
The ceremony was suppose to take place tomorrow, April 30.
The reason for the cancelation is fear of protest from the trade union.

Fincantieri said in a statement:

"The reason for this difficult decision is that there were grounds for serious concern that what should have been a day of celebration would be jeopardised by forms of unusual protest announced by the trade union association Fiom in the context of their opposition to the renewal of the supplementary company contract signed by the other trade unions - Fim, Uilm and Ugl - on 1 April."

"Protests would have stopped the celebrations from taking place as planned and seriously inconvenienced both guests and the families of the staff themselves. Fincantieri would like to apologise both to guests and to staff, who have been unfairly affected by attitudes they do not share."

" It is a worker’s right to strike and as such is fully respected by the company. However, industrial action should not be turned into a show as unfortunately has been the case in recent months with Fiom on one side and the company and the other unions on the other. This is all the more serious when it happens on the occasion of events which should be a source of pride and satisfaction for all concerned,"

The naming ceremony of the Costa Luminosa is supposed to take place June 5 this year.
