GREAT question, Neal! Athens vs Rome is a much harder choice.
The comparison between Venice and Rome was not a fair comparison...it was apples and oranges. It simply boiled down to whether you mainly like looking at beautiful sights or whether you prefer visiting some place which could change the way you think about mankind, history, human behavior, etc.. Athens has a whole different kind of 'wow factor' than Venice. But not everybody wants to think or learn on vacations. Sometimes people just want to see pretty sights. There's nothing wrong with either...but it really is apples and oranges.
But Rome versus Athens is apples and apples.
I'd have to say between Rome and Athens I'd choose Rome. Because of the number of things the Romans did to change the world, and also because the number of things there are to see and do in Rome.
Oh, and it's prettier, too!
