We've sailed on both HAL and Celebrity and on both cruises were at a loss to distinguish between informal and smart casual. Now I could distinguish between informal and casual, but it's the 'smart' adjective that left us confused.
And judging from the way most dressed we decided we weren't the only confused ones. If one forgot the night's designation and simply looked around, the guess was only easy on formal nights!
We're moving down to NCL this winter simply because we didn't want to have to bring along dress clothes as the cruise is only part of an extended stay in Spain where we wouldn't need even smart casual. So our smart casual will be only moderately smart in that my husband's not even bringing along a jacket.
