It's strange how sometimes the shore excursions offered by the cruise line are similar while other times there is a dramatic difference.

The last time we were in Aruba, Princess offered a tour of the island on Harley Davidson motorcycles - cost was $355 for a 4-hour tour. I contacted the local Harley Dealer in Aruba and they offered the exact same tour for $155! (Price is per bike, not per person.) And when we went on the tour, there were two couples from the ship who paid the $355, while there were 3 other couples who were staying on the island - all of whom paid $155, which is what we paid. I know the cruise line has to make some money on the deal, but $200 profit?

Another time, we did the helicopter/dog sled excursion in Juneau. Holland America wanted $425 per person, while we booked it independently for $325 per person.

So my advice is always check around and see what kind of prices you can find - sometimes it pays to just do it with the cruise line while other times it's better to book independently.
