You can snorkel both places if you want.

For a first timer, an organized snorkel excursion with a good guide would probably be more comfortable situation, and Nassau would be the place for that. They'll give you a bit of instruction, and you'll go in a specified area with a group. That way, if you have problems of any kind, there is a guide there to help. Also, you get a nice boatride to the snorkel site, and refreshments on the boat ride back.


At CocoCay. it's more of an 'on your own' type of snorkel... walking in from the beach and swimming out to wherever you want to go. They do give you a little bit of group instruction on the beach first, but they don't go in the water with you or direct you to certain areas... just give you some general 'where to ' guidelines.
