If you intend on buying local goods, have dollars, and make sure you have plenty of small bills; they will pretend to not have change. Expect to negotiate, and do not be afraid to offer low and stay low. Some of the indoor vendors take major credit cards. We bought some art and are very happy with it, but don't fall for the "I painted it" statements. Much of the paintings you see are group work, kind of a paint by numbers (but nicer!), so they do have a hand in it. We got a fantastic rendition of Columbus landing at Haiti (which is where Labadee is in case you are disoriented!) and another of island natives carrying fruit. We wanted "local" art. Don't over pay for it, they are making it by the dozens/hundreds. Walk all around the vendors first before you decide. Have fun, it is fun, and please by all means do buy something....these people are very poor and rely on this for their living. Make sure you have some one's with you when you go the fire breather dance routine after lunch.
