Hawksnest Bay is before you get to Trunk Bay driving from Cruz Bay. It is about a 5 or 10 minute drive from Trunk Bay as I recall. If you are coming in on a cruise ship tour however I think it would be difficult to get there unless it is on the list of places they go. We stayed on St. John for a few days so we could drive to wherever we wanted to. You could always take the ferry over from St. Thomas on your own and rent a car there but if you get stranded you are on your own. When we were at Trunk Bay the weather was very good. It rained the day before. Got up the first day and it was cold, windy and raining. Thought o this is just great, traveled all this way and it is raining. The next day was bright sunshine. When at Trunk Bay after you are there a while you "have snorkeled everywhere" and are ready to go somewhere else so I asked one of the lifeguards where else is good and he said Hawksnest Bay. He told me about the reef going out from shore and he thought it was even bettere than Trunk Bay so off we went, and I think I agree with him. There is a reef slightly off to the left of center that goes out from shore. The water is very shallow over the reef; maybe 3 or 4 feet as I recall. So snorkeled all along the edge. Lots of coral and fish. I prefer shallow water snorkeling because the fish are much closer than in deep water so I am always looking for shallow water snorkeling.
